As joias douradas causam alergia? Saiba porquê

A gold hoop can transform a white shirt, but it shouldn’t cause itching, redness or a dark mark on your skin. So, do gold-coloured jewellery pieces cause allergies? They can, but the gold colour you see on the surface rarely tells the whole story. The answer lies in the metal underneath, the alloy used and the way the piece has been finished.

For those who wear jewellery every day, knowing how to read material details is just as essential as finding the right ring or creating the perfect ear stack. Comfort is also a luxury. And a well-chosen piece deserves to be worn on repeat, not kept in a box because it causes discomfort.

Why does gold-coloured jewellery cause allergies?

In most cases, the reaction is not caused by gold. High-purity gold is a minimally reactive metal and is therefore generally well tolerated. The challenge is that pure gold is too soft for much everyday jewellery. To increase its strength, it is combined with other metals to form an alloy.

Nickel is one of the most frequent causes of contact dermatitis associated with jewellery. When it is present in an alloy or in a base-metal piece with a gold coating, it can cause itching, burning, redness, small bumps or dry skin in the contact area. Earlobes, wrists, necks and fingers are particularly sensitive areas, especially when the piece is worn for many hours.

It is also possible to react to other components, such as copper, cobalt or certain agents used in the finishing process. This does not mean that anyone with sensitive skin will react to every gold-coloured jewellery piece. It simply means that the material, composition and individual sensitivity all make a difference.

There is also an important distinction: irritated skin is not always synonymous with an allergy. Heat, sweat, perfume, creams, soaps or the friction of a ring that is too tight can irritate the skin without there being a specific allergy to a metal. When the reaction keeps recurring with certain pieces and improves when you stop wearing them, it is worth investigating.

Gold-coloured is not a material: what to look for in the composition

A gold-coloured jewellery piece may be solid gold, a gold alloy, gold-plated silver or a base-metal piece with a coating. Visually, they may look similar. On the skin, the experience can be very different.

18-carat gold

18-carat gold contains 75% pure gold. The remaining 25% consists of metals that give the jewellery stability, colour and durability. It is a premium choice for anyone looking for a piece designed to accompany years of wear, with a golden presence that does not depend on a superficial coating.

Even so, 18 carats does not automatically mean that there will be no reaction. If you are sensitive to a metal present in the alloy, discomfort may occur. It is less common, but possible. Anyone who has experienced persistent reactions should confirm the composition before buying, rather than deciding solely based on colour or price.

Gold-plated 925 silver

925 silver is made up of 92.5% silver and a small percentage of other metals, generally to provide greater strength. When it receives a gold coating, it offers a golden sheen with a quality silver base. It is an elegant, lightweight and versatile option for building an everyday jewellery collection.

Over time, any coating can show signs of wear, especially on rings, bracelets and pieces exposed to constant friction. If the golden layer wears away, the skin comes into contact with the base metal. For someone with sensitive skin, that detail can change everything.

Pieces with a gold coating over base metal

Not all gold coatings are the same. The thickness of the coating, the quality of the base metal and how the piece is used all influence both its appearance and how well the skin tolerates it. A very lightweight and affordable piece may be perfect for an occasion, but it may not be the best choice for everyday wear if you have a history of irritation.

The issue is not choosing gold-coloured jewellery with a coating. It is not knowing what lies underneath. Transparency about materials is a good sign of quality and allows you to choose with intention.

How to recognise an allergic reaction to gold-coloured jewellery

A contact reaction tends to appear precisely where the jewellery touches the skin. It may begin a few hours after wearing the piece or appear after several days of continuous use. Itching is common, but it is not the only sign: redness, slight swelling, flaking, cracks or small blisters also deserve attention.

If your earlobe becomes inflamed after putting in earrings, remove them and let the area recover before wearing jewellery again. If a ring leaves your skin irritated only at a certain time of year, notice whether there is more heat, sweat or contact with cleaning products. This information helps distinguish an allergy from temporary irritation.

When the reaction is intense, persistent or affects an area larger than the contact site, the best step is to speak to a dermatologist. Patch testing can identify allergies to specific metals. There is no point persisting with a piece that your skin clearly does not tolerate, however beautiful it may be.

Choosing gold-coloured jewellery for sensitive skin

Start by prioritising brands that clearly identify their materials and metal purity. Knowing whether you are buying 18-carat gold, gold-plated 925 silver or a piece with a coating over another metal makes the choice safer and more informed.

If you already know that you are allergic to nickel, look for jewellery explicitly described as nickel-free and ask for details about the alloy if the information is not available. The term “hypoallergenic” can be useful, but it is not a universal guarantee: every skin type has its own tolerance, and a generic designation does not replace a detailed composition.

For earrings, where the skin may be more reactive, pay particular attention to the posts and backs. These are the parts that remain in direct contact with the skin and, in a well-designed piece, deserve the same quality as the visible element. For rings and bracelets, choose smooth finishes, the right sizes and materials designed for frequent wear.

At CINCO, materials such as 925 silver and 18-carat gold form part of a more intentional approach to jewellery: pieces designed to stand out without feeling heavy, and to accompany your routine with an effortless elegance.

Habits that help protect your skin and jewellery

Even high-quality jewellery benefits from a few simple care habits. Remove it before swimming, doing intense exercise or applying perfume, hairspray and creams directly to the area where you will wear it. Sweat and cosmetics do not create an allergy to a metal, but they can worsen irritation and accelerate the wear of certain coatings.

After wearing it, clean the piece with a soft, dry cloth, without harsh products, and store it separately. This reduces scratches, preserves the finish and prevents residue from remaining in contact with your skin the next time you wear it. If an earring, necklace or ring starts causing a reaction after months without problems, check whether the surface is scratched or the coating has worn away.

Also avoid the improvised solution of painting the inside of the jewellery with nail varnish. It may seem like a quick fix, but the varnish deteriorates, may irritate the skin even further and changes the finish of the piece. Choosing the right material from the start is always more elegant.

Gold-coloured jewellery should bring light to your look, not ask your skin for tolerance. Understanding the composition, respecting your body’s signals and choosing intentionally made pieces allows you to wear your favourites time and time again, with comfort and confidence.
